a little about candace…
So, I’m a simple girl, I like to laugh a lot and I like to be right. But I love being challenged. I worked in the non-profit world for a bunch of years and I’ve just graduated from Colorado College majoring in history and political science focused on the Middle East and minoring in religion. I’ve learned a lot through my education (shocking, I know!) and my ideas and positions on so many things have been transformed. This blog will probably focus on life, politics, international justice, the future of the church, etc.

Candace, I just read your post about being led out of evangelism. I am a very strong Christian woman who, like you, was a religion minor at Cornell College, the sister school to Colorado College. Perhaps it is that liberal arts bent, or perhaps we have been blessed to receive an extra dose of wisdom into who it is we are to be as Christians. I am on a very similar journey and feel blessed to have come across your words to know that I am not alone. I know that God will bless you on this journey. If you still live in the Colorado area, would love to sit and have coffee and discuss our mutual road.

I am older than you, but not wiser. I concur with what you said and have been on a similar journey myself. I am a pastor in the conservative south, but it is interesting how much of what you say resonates with the people I shepherd. I believe that the old wine skins of evangelicalism are being broken and God is doing a new thing, where the face of Christianity might become more open-minded, more inclusive, and more willing to love those different than us. Kind of sounds like something Jesus would do!
If you really want to get deep, I believe that in the Protestant reformation, we put so much emphasis on the Bible that we Protestants over time began to worship it – seeing it as infalliable and inerrant rather than as a story that reveals God’s actions in the world.
I am almost where you are with the gay issue, but I am wondering about several things – one in the Christian tradition, celibacy has been celebrated as a means of honoring God. Richard Foster gives us some beautiful words about people who have homosexual tendencies not acting upon them and staying chaste for the glory of God. I don’t know if I totally agree with that, but i do know in our hyper-sexed society, refraining from sex – whether gay or straight, may not be a bad thing. Also, I wonder what the next shoe to drop will be. Will some groups claim they want plural marriages because Joe loves Jill and Jane and they both love him? I am interested in your responses to these things because I want to hear from a thoughtful Christian young person.

I have been so glad to have read your thoughts on Evangelicals guns and Palestine///I bet the opposition you get would be from those who disagree with you in all 3 areas….interesting. Sorry that your story of leaving the evangelical world has focused so much on the gay issue, you have said so much more than that and I thank you for what you have said and felt. I am in Canada and watch the debates in the south with great interest.
